Description
This sympathetic study of Rachel Lenox is among John Trumbull's most appealing portraits. When it was exhibited in London in 1806 along with Trumbull's portrait of her hesband, Robewrt Lenox, the artist Benjamin west predicted to Trumbull, "that picture [of Mers. Lenox] would then stand the competition with some of the finest Portraits of the times." Born into a prominent Connecticut family, John Trunbull greatly admired Copley's work while a student at Harvard in the early 1770s. After serving as an officer in the Continental Army, he began his own career as an artist. Although Trumbull preferred history painting, portraiture was his bread and butter - and his portraits rivaled those of Gilbert Stuart in popularity. Active in the New York (later American) Academy of the Fine Arts, Trumbull was elected a director for 1805-1808 and vice-president in 1808. Between 1816 and 1835 he served as the organization's president.
