Biographical/historical: The island of jewels was staged in December 1849 at the Lyceum Theatre, London, under the management of Charles Mathews and Madame Vestris. Described as "an original grand comic fairy extravaganza," it combined a fairy-tale plot with music, dance (created by Oscar Byrne), and stage spectacle. According to William W. Appleton's Madame Vestris and the London stage (1974), much of the spectacle was the work of the Lyceum's scene painter William Beverly, who designed a finale in which an enormous gilded palm tree opened its branches to reveal a group of fairies supporting a coronet.
