Abstract
Bill Moran interviews Leida Snow, theater critic, Barbara Handman, political consultant, arts activist, and the executive vice-president and New York City office director of People for the American Way, and William Donahue, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. They talk about the 1998 production of "Corpus Christi," a play by Terrence McNally, dramatizing the story of Jesus and the Apostles that depicts Jesus and the Apostles as gay men living in modern-day Texas, and about critical attention for its exploration of gay themes in Christianity (planned production of the play in New York City was cancelled and then reinstated). Being arts activists, Leida Snow and Barbara Handmann support the production of the play and say that the cancellation of the show would be an affront to the First Amendment principles of free speech, unlike William Donahue, the conservative Christian, who organized the protest, and opposes the play.
