Interview with Bertram Ross conducted by Marian Horosko (approximately 30 minutes), at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, and interview with Marianna Gates conducted by Alvin H. Reiss (approximately 10 minutes), for broadcast on radio station WNYC-FM, New York, on its series World of Dance, in 1965. Streaming file (approximately first 37:40 minutes). [Music and introductory remarks by an unidentified announcer; introductory remarks by Marian Horosko followed by the playing of an excerpt of recorded music.] Bertram Ross speaks with Marian Horosko, at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, about the 18th American Dance Festival at Connecticut College including works presented and the curriculum for dance students; the tendency of modern dancers to form their own companies; the Palmer Auditorium; more on the works and companies to be presented including a group led by Paul Draper; Ross's work Untitled [a recorded excerpt from Walter Caldon's music for Untitled is played]; more on works presented at the Festival; the dance faculty and the students; some of the roles Ross has performed in Martha Graham's works; modern dance and male dancers; Martha Graham technique. [The interview with Ross ends at approximately 30:15 minutes.] Horosko comments on Martha Graham's work Appalachian spring and plays a recorded excerpt of the music, by Aaron Copland [Horosko's closing remarks and introduction of host, Alvin H. Reiss introduces his guest Marianna Gates, director of the Clark Center for the Performing Arts at the West Side YWCA; Marianna Gates speaks about the programs at the Clark Center, including the providing of rehearsal space; who uses the Center; the faculty at the Center including Alvin Ailey; the semi-annual show case performances; the Center's theaters; other programs and activities of the Center; helping young artists as the primary purpose of the Center.
