Abstract

Robin Howard speaks with Tobi Tobias about how he first came to be interested in Martha Graham; the impact on him of seeing Graham and her company [Martha Graham Dance Company] perform, in London; his impressions of the male dancers including Bertram Ross, Robert Cohan, and Robert Powell; some of the more notable female dancers including Pearl Lang, Mary Hinkson, Helen McGehee, and Ethel Winter; how his anger with the public and critical response to the London performances led to his association with Graham and the company; Graham as a person; the company's second British tour including Howard's role in arranging it; its favorable critical reception; his thoughts on dance critics [ends abruptly but interview continues on streaming audio fie 2]. Robin Howard speaks with Tobi Tobias about Graham technique; Jane Dudley as a teacher of Graham technique; the development of Graham technique as taught at Howard's school [The Place; now part of the London Contemporary Dance School]; the establishment of The Place and its role in his life; his relationship with Martha Graham and her company during this time; his proposals regarding the company and the reasons Graham could not bring herself to implement them; the high level of tension in the company; his great admiration for Graham and gratitude that he knew her.
