CONTENTS. - Reel 1 (approx. 62 min.): Introduction by Margaret Batiuchok. In the studio, Frank Manning and Batiuchok dance the lindy; Manning explains and demonstrates its steps and variations, and those of the shim sham and the big apple. Batiuchok interviews Manning, who talks about his experiences as a lindy-hopper, including dancing at the Savoy Ballroom and competing in the Harvest Moon Ball competitions. - Reel 2 (approx. 50 min. total): Continuation of the interview/demonstration by Manning and Batiuchok (approx. 18 min.). Manning discusses the qualities of a good lindy-hopper and demonstrates the collegiate, the dance that gave rise to the lindy; he also contrasts present-day styles of dancing the lindy with those of the past. Improvised dance performance at the Cat Club (approx. 9 min.), recorded at CodanceCo's Gotta-dance Gotta-pay-the-rent Ball. Danced by Batiuchok, George Lloyd, Tom Lewis, and Manning, accompanied by the Loren Schoenberg Big Band. Interview of Batiuchok by Jesper Sorensen (?), interspersed with dancing by Batiuchok and Charlie Meade (approx. 22 min.). Batiuchok discusses her own dance background and experiences as a teacher and performer of the lindy.

Content: Part 1 of a four-part series subtitled Videotapes recorded December 1987-January 1988 for a master's thesis project by Margaret Batiuchok. Videographer: Donald Young. Improvised dance performance at the Cat Club, New York, videotaped on March 21, 1988, by Ronald Kienhuis. Additional footage of Margaret Batiuchok and Charlie Meade videotaped by Vibeke Winding and Jesper Sorensen.
