Inside front cover, engraving of "Residence of R. W. Emerson, Concord, Mass." pasted in. First leaf recto, engraved portrait of RWE pasted in. First leaf verso, presentation of volume by James T. Fields to George MacDonald; George MacDonald's bookplate. Second leaf recto, letter from RWE to J. T. Fields, Dec. 28 [1862], 1 double leaf, pasted on. Third leaf recto, "Beauty"; verso, list in pencil of Conduct of Life I-VII: "Fate | Power | Wealth | Culture | Behaviour [sic]| Worship | Consid [sic]" [page] 1, "Of Beauty," etc.
