Content: Typed on mount: "Right: long coat, plumed felt hat, brass shoulder scales of Civil War full dress uniform. Sword peculiar to non-commissioned officers. Left: modified form with 'frogging' of a musician and 'bummer's cap' common to Northern army. Detail: Brass shoulder 'scale' and hat decoration for full dress wear during Civil War."
Content: Written on mount: "Instrument is an 'ophicleide', a sort of huge, keyed, brass bugle popular in the early and mid-1800's."
