Description
Bill of sale for Nat's indenture, between William Stothart and Guy Bryan, 28th Nov. 1812, handwritten on reverse side of letter. Pennsylvania passed a gradual emancipation statute in 1780. Children subsequently born to women who were slaves before the Act’s effective date remained in slavery until the age of 28; until then they had the status of indentured servants. The persons mentioned in the letter all appear to be Philadelphians.
