Biographical/historical: This print documents a dance performance presented in 1860 before members of the first Japanese diplomatic mission to the United States. Japan had been opened to the United States in 1854 by Commodore Matthew Perry, and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, also known as the Harris Treaty, had been signed aboard ship in 1858. This diplomatic mission, dispatched by Japan's Tokugawa Shogunate, ratified the treaty. The delegation made several stops in the United States, including Washington, D.C., where this performance took place, and New York City.
