Abstract

Interviews with Stuart Hodes conducted by Lucile Brahms Nathanson, as host, for broadcast by WHPC-FM, the radio station of Nassau Community College, on its series Making the dance scene. The date of the interviews is not indicated, but both were probably conducted in the 1970s. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 14 minutes). [Music.] Lucile Brahms Nathanson introduces the program Making the dance scene, and her guest Stuart Hodes; Hodes speaks with Nathanson about the department of dance at the School of the Arts at New York University [renamed the Tisch School of the Arts in 1982] including its physical location and the other (arts-related) departments located there; the extent of interaction among the departments; the student body of the dance department; the principles that guide his direction of the department including an emphasis on professional careers; the funding of dance groups and academic performance venues [closing remarks and music]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 16 minutes). [Music.] Lucile Brahms Nathanson introduces the program and guest Stuart Hodes; Hodes speaks with Nathanson about how he first became interested in dance; studying at Martha Graham's studio and touring with the Martha Graham Dance Company; learning composition from Louis Horst; his early choreographic works; learning modern and ballet technique, at the Martha Graham School of Dance and at the School of American Ballet, respectively; his time at the company during which he also danced at commercial venues; Martha Graham and her support of his work; his current position, at the School of the Arts at New York University; one of his favorite roles, the Dark Beloved, in Graham's Deaths and entrances; other roles in Graham's works he enjoyed dancing [closing remarks and music].
