The man is asleep : he would not willingly hurt a fly, to say nothing of a child, but, 'much bemused with beer,' he knows not the mischief his wheels are doing. He can scarcely even be accused of carelessness, for how could he expect a child to be there unguarded? It is the nurse or mother that is to blame. Nobody who has to do with beer is inhumane."
