Abstract

Interview with Murray Louis conducted by Anita Page for broadcast by radio station WFCR [owned by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst], Amherst, Massachusetts, on its program, Extensions of dance, May 1, 1968. Streaming audio file (approximately 26 minutes). Anita Page introduces Murray Louis; Murray Louis speaks with Anita Page about his non-verbal, non-literal performances at the Henry Street Playhouse; abstraction as a means to revelation; the reactions in India to his dances; dance in colleges and universities in the United States including the changes over the years; the definition of professionalism in [modern] dance including the dominance of Martha Graham technique in academic settings outside of New York City; differences between his own and Alwin Nikolais' choreography; the training of students at Henry Street Playhouse including the qualities he hopes to see a dancer develop; his work in film [ends abruptly].
