In this video, Rona Elliot interviews Joe Smith, the president of Capitol/EMI Records and the author of the book "Off the record: an oral history of popular music" (published in 1988). They talk about Smith's interviews of 220 musicians from the swing era to the present during a two-year period. Featured musicians (in video clips) Smith talked about in the news report were Van Morrison, Mitch Miller, Rosemary Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elton John, Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra (no video clip).
