Statement Of Responsibility: Will. Hogarth ft.
Acquisition: Gift; Lillian Moore.
Biographical/Historical: According to the British Museum, which holds copies of this print, the inscription "Will. Hogarth ft." is misleading, and the print was actually made by Anna Maria Ireland, the daughter of printmaker Samuel Ireland. In 1965 the art historian Ronald Paulson confirmed that this was a forgery, probably made ca. 1794.

Abstract

Tradecard for the fencing master James Figg, who is depicted at center in shirtsleeves, his right hand holding a sword, his left hand at his hip. A man in hat and coat stands beside him, holding a quarterstaff; a crowd of male spectators await the spectacle.
