Biographical/Historical: The works depicted are: Le programme en action by Augustin Vizentini and Guérée, described as an "ouverture," presented at the Théâtre Dejazet in 1859; the revue Sans queue ni tête, written by Théodore Cogniard and Clairville, presented at the Théâtre des Variétés in 1859; and La Circassienne, an opéra-comique to music by Daniel Auber, presented at the Théâtre de l'Opéra Comique in 1861.
Biographical/Historical: Edmond Morin was a French watercolorist, lithographer, and illustrator. Among his works is an illustrated libretto for Jacques Offenbach's opera bouffe Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the underworld). These prints may have been published as parts of the series Galerie dramatique.
Biographical/Historical: The printing and publishing house of Maison Martinet was founded in 1796 by Aaron Martinet, 1762-1841, who became well-known for publishing satirical prints. In 1822 the firm assumed the name Hautecoeur-Martinet, after Martinet's son-in-law Hermenégilde Hautecoeur, who became its head after Martinet's retirement in 1824. The brothers Eugène and Alfred Hautecoeur, the Hautecoeur Frères, managed the business from 1843 to 1867. Jules Hautecoeur, Alfred's son and the great-grandson of the founder, later became the sole proprietor of Ancienne Maison Martinet.
