Biographical/historical: The cultural phenomenon called Bohemianism got its name in nineteenth-century France, where it was associated with an unconventional lifestyle usually focused on intellectual and artistic pursuits rather than the accumulation of material wealth. Captured in Henri Murger's short-story collection Scènes de la vie de Bohème (1845), which inspired Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème (1896), this lifestyle was expressed in part through a disregard for bourgeois mores, manners, and clothing, as may be seen in the costume of the man in the foreground of this print.
