Abstract

Comments by choreographers, ballet coaches and ballet dancers intermingle with excerpts from recordings of dance rehearsals and performances. Topics include: life stories and careers of famous dancers and choreographers, the history of the Bolshoĭ Theater, creation of new ballets, Soviet choreographic school, its budget and structure, the essence of choreography, and classical ballet training. The host speaks about the history of the theater and the famous dancers and choreographers of the past who contributed to its progress and fame and, details of the theater's operation. This recording contains the only recorded speech made by Lunacharsky, the first Soviet People's Commissar of Enlightenment responsible for culture and education, who argued for the protection of arts after the Bolshevik Party came to power.
