Description
The host with some commentary from Tilson Thomas, introduces this piece of program music that tells the story of an artist hopelessly in love and therefore poisoning himself with opium somewhat reflecting the events in the life of the composer. Berlioz wrote accompanying notes for each movement considered as the spoken text of an opera. The symphony is broadcast by movements that are preceded by explanatory annotations as to the story line and some historical background. The program ends with a brief excerpt from Berlioz's Lélio, ou le Retour à la Vie, announced as the feature of the next broadcast.
