Biographical/historical: Founded in 1713, the Ecole de Danse of the Paris Opéra has a long tradition of providing rigorous training for ballet dancers. Students are required to take an entrance examination before being admitted to the school, and annual end-of-year examinations insure that they are making sufficient progress to move up to the next level of training. A final competition decides who will be admitted to the corps de ballet of the Paris Opéra.
Physical Description
Lithographs
Extent: 1 print : lithograph, b&w ; 30 x 39 cm.
Penciled on the verso: probably shows an examination at the Paris Opera Ballet School, circa 1870.
Description
Sheet containing seven vignettes. Four are numbered, but three appear to display their numbers in reverse. The images depict a mixed group of dancers in front of a group of black-clad figures, probably judges, seated at a table; a uniformed servant moistening the floor with a watering can, to prevent the dancers from slipping; groups of dancers in various ballet positions; and two solitary female dancers. The women all wear white tutus, while the men are dressed in white shirts and black knee breeches.
