Extent: 1 audiocassette (approximately 1 hr., 16 min.) : quarter-track; 1.875 ips.
Sound quality is fair. The recording is marred by extraneous noise including "tape hiss" and occasional short gaps, but the speakers' voices are easily intelligible.

Abstract

Interview with Dennis Wayne conducted by John Gruen on April 16, and 30, 1975, at Wayne's home in New York City, as research for an article in Dance Magazine. The article, entitled Close-up: Dennis Wayne, appeared in the July 1975 issue of Dance Magazine. Streaming file 1 (approximately 48 minutes), April 16, 1975. [John Gruen's introductory remarks.] Dennis Wayne speaks with John Gruen about his new company Dancers [Dennis Wayne's Dancers] beginning with how his experiences with the Harkness Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet led him to form a company; an earlier company, Dennis Wayne's American Dancers; his reasons for starting a company and Joanne Woodward's support; the repertoire planned for the premiere performance at Jacob's Pillow; his plans for raising the necessary funds; more on the reasons he feels compelled to start his own company; evaluating himself as a dancer; his goals for the company [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2]. Streaming file 2 (approximately 28 minutes), April 16 [first approximate 3:20 minutes] and April 30 [from approximately 3:25 minutes to end of recording]. Dennis Wayne continues to speak with John Gruen about his new company Dennis Wayne's Dancers and what he hopes to accomplish [interview ends but resumes after short gap with April 30 addendum]. Dennis Wayne speaks with John Gruen about the company's first performance, at Westbeth [Westbeth Artists' Residence in New York City]; his discussions with Lucia [Chase] regarding his new company; the dancers in the company including Bonnie [Mathis], Martine van Hamel, Buddy Balough, and Kennteh Hughes; the repertoire including a new version of Norman Walker's The Prussian officer; his difficulties raising money for the company and his reorganization of the Board of Directors; plans for performing, possibly in the Delacorte Theater.
