Content: "Epaulets" (also "epaulettes") are the shoulder pads of a high-ranking officer's uniform, usually with a fringe of braid at their outer ends. The ones on this coat are soft and stylized with rolled-up ends. The "military cord", (officially called an "aguilette"), shows that its wearer is part of a general or admiral's staff. Note, too, the patriotic eagle motif on the hat and belt buckle.
Content: Includes sketch of back view of garment. Large pockets at the hips give a look which suggests a short jacket worn with a skirt.
Content: The United States was not yet fighting in World War II when this coat was designed, but news from overseas and military preparations at home were on many Americans' minds.
Content: Printed on image: "Collar and epaulets in one. Military cord slips through under epaulet." "Designed by Pearl Alexander" "ANDRE' 570 - 7th Ave. New York City[.] Feb. 3, 1941"
Date: Illustration origninally bound in Spring, 1940-1941, B.
