Biographical/historical: The opéra comique Le petit duc, known in English as The little duke (music, Charles Lecocq; libretto, Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy) was first performed at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, Paris, in January 1878, and was staged in London in April 1878. It enjoyed great popularity and was produced in a number of European capitals. It was first presented in New York in 1879. This print may have been inspired by a scene in the third act of the opera, which took place in a military camp beside a battlefield.
Biographical/historical: The German term Marketenderin or its French equivalent vivandière signifies a female sutler, or civilian supplier of provisions to an army.
