Abstract

The nationally-broadcast program "The Listening Room", hosted by Robert Sherman, a radio broadcaster, author, and music critic, presents 2 guests and includes music performed by them as well as advertising of upcoming cultural events and commercials. The 1st part of the program features Austrian conductor Michael Gielen in his 4th year of leading the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra which he brought to New York for performances at Carnegie Hall. Gielen examines the Viennese School, composers Berg, Beethoven, Mahler, Schubert, modern American composer Jonathan Kramer, and justifies his choice of including contemporary composers in concert programs, a practice begun by Pierre Boulez whose repertoire contained ultra-modern works, not always favorably met by the public. Music performed by the Cincinnati Orchestra conducted by Gielen consists of selections from Lyric suite by Berg and Lulu Suite sung by Kathleen Battle from Berg's opera Lulu, and finale from Oboe concerto by Richard Strauss with Heinz Holliger as a soloist. The 2nd part of the program profiles Samuel Ramey, a rising bass who just recently debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in the opera Rinaldo. Ramey speaks about his roles and parts, colleagues, future and current projects, singing at the Met, and compares concert and stage performances. The recording of Ramey's aria of Figaro from the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart and a duet (Ramey with tenor Ernesto Palacio) from The Italian Girl in Algiers by Rossini is also broadcast.
