In some cases the paper was treated by the artist with turpentine, gasoline or kerosene, or one of these substances was mixed with the printing ink. Such printsare designated "epreuves a l'essence". Preliminary states frequently include elaborate remarques or marginal sketches, which Buhot called "marges symphoniques".
