Sound quality ranges from poor to fair. The first approximate three minutes of the recording are very difficult to understand and at times completely unintelligible. Thereafter, sound quality greatly improves, but volume is low.
Description
Interview with Ruth Page conducted by John Gruen, as host, for broadcast on February 16, 1976 by radio station WNCN-FM, New York on its series The sound of dance. Streaming audio file (approximately 59 minutes). John Gruen, host, introduces his guest Ruth Page [unintelligible section]; Ruth Page speaks with Gruen about dancing in Anna Pavlova's company; dancing for Adolf Bolm; marrying Thomas Hart Fisher and joining the Diaghilev ballet [Ballets russes] on her honeymoon; her memories of Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets russes including George Balanchine; Aaron Copland and her work Hear ye! Hear ye!; creating ballets commissioned by the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration); her and Bentley Stone's work Frankie and Johnny; its reception in Paris, France including Serge Lifar's dislike of the work [a recording of music by Jerome Moross used in the work is played]; Adolf Bolm's Apollo; creating ballets based on operas including her work Carmen; Harald Kreutzberg and her visits to Japan, in 1928 and 1934; the Chicago Ballet [a recording of music by Georges Bizet from Carmen is played]; an anecdote about Maurice Ravel; various artists with whom she worked; what she thinks of the dance companies she sees perform today; her upcoming book [Gruen's closing remarks; music; ends abruptly].
