Abstract

Starting with an excerpt from Romeo et Juliette Fantasy-overture, a documentary on the newly formed orchestra of young musicians, Miami's New World Symphony, a full-time orchestral academy preparing musicians for careers in symphony orchestras, directed and conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas who along with the students/performers and various persons involved with the orchestra comment on the structure of the establishment and everyday life and work of the young musicians. The orchestra is depicted in training, rehearsals and performances. Thomas is portrayed as the main force behind the success of this program who motivates and inspires the students with his enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism.Young violinist Joshua Bell provides commentary and performs Mendelssohn's violin concerto in E minor, andante. The program concludes with the performance of the Sinfonietta, 5th movement by Janáček.
