Description
Walter Terry, as part of his preparation for writing a biography of August Bournonville entitled: The King's ballet master: a biography of Denmark's August Bournonville (New York: Dodd, Mead Co., 1979), records himself reading out loud from (an English language translation of) Bournonville's autobiography, My theatre life (approximately 35 minutes.) In the second part of the recording, Terry records his thoughts on the Royal Danish Ballet's Bournonville Festival, in November 1979, in Copenhagen, Denmark (approximately 46 minutes). Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 35 minutes). In preparation for writing a biography of August Bournonville, Walter Terry reads excerpts from Bournonville's autobiography, My theatre life, in which the choreographer describes how he created several of his ballets including the Flower festival in Genzano [Blomsterfesten i Genzano], Napoli, Far from Denmark [Fjernt fra Danmark; eller Et Costumebal ombord], Kermesse in Bruges [Kermessen i Brügge; eller De tre Gaver], A folk tale [Folkesagn], and La sylphide. Terry occasionally interpolates a brief comment. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 46 minutes). Walter Terry records his thoughts on the Royal Danish Ballet's Bournonville Festival, held in honor of the centenary of August Bournonville's death; he describes the company's [pre-Festival] performances of a number of Bournonville ballets including the Flower festival in Genzano [Blomsterfesten i Genzano], Life guards on Amager Point [sometimes referred to as The King's voluntary corps on Amager], Conservatoriet; and Kermesse in Bruges [Kermessen i Brügge; eller De tre Gaver]; an exhibition he saw on Bournonville and the Danish Royal Ballet [Kongelige Danske ballet]; his thoughts on a performance he saw of Fleming Flindt's The triumph of death; a dress rehearsal he saw of Bournonville's A folk tale [Folkesagn] as well as a performance of La sylphide; opening night of the Festival including a description of the performance he saw of Far from Denmark [Fjernt fra Danmark; eller Et Costumebal ombord]; a performance he saw of Napoli; other performances he saw [ends abruptly].
