To relieve the front at Tobruk and Malta the British in mid-June sent a heavily armed naval convoy from Gibraltar and a second one from Alexandria. The convoy coming from Gibraltar was attacked by the Italian air force. In doing so torpedo planes succeeded in sinking 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers, plus 3 cargo steamships. 1 battleship, 1 aircraft carrier and 2 cruisers were badly damaged.
