Abstract
"The Pharos of Ptolemy King of Egypt was built AM [anno mundi] 3670 at the entrance of the Port Alexandria, and on account of its magnificence has transmitted its name Pharos to all other sea Light Houses. The Tower consisted of several Stories & the Lanthorn at top was of prodigious height. Gnidius the builder dedicated it to the King by an inscription cut in Mortar, which being effaced by time another inscription appeared finely cut in Marble, viz. Sostrates Gnidius son of Dixiphenes has consecrated this work to the Gods our Preservers for the benefit of sea faring Men."--lettered on border.
