Description
On his return from Mount Vernon he had hoped to see Gates, but found on reaching New York that the latter had gone back to Traveller's Rest; he reached Gen. Washington's on June 2; on reading the resolve of Congress, the General said that he would keep no papers back, but would trust to Gordon's prudence in making use of them; until the 19th Gordon worked hard every day, and examined thirty-three volumes of copied letters of the General's, three volumes of private letters, two of general orders, and bundles upon bundles of letters to him; the knowledge gained is ample compensation; he reminds Gates of a promise to give him the Convention paper, signed by Burgoyne; he expects papers from Gen. Otho Williams on the southern operations, which will tend to exculpate Gates, and throw light on some subtle manœuvres of [William] Smallwood in getting thanks to which he was not entitled.
