Biographical/historical: The portrayal of the interactions between young and beautiful women and wealthy older men is scarcely new to art, but in the nineteenth century it found new expression in depicting the women as ballet dancers and the men as their so-called patrons, thus adding the glamour of the theatrical world and a veneer of artistic patronage to the interchange. These scenes might be set in the foyer de danse or green-room of a theatre, or in the ballet studio, or behind the scenes at a performance, as in this print.

Sheet music cover illustration depicting a moment behind the scenes at a theater. Concealed from the audience by the scenery, three men in evening dress mingle with five young female ballet dancers in knee-length costumes. A fourth man in a top hat leans against a flat at left.
