Abstract

Speaking to an unidentified off-camera interviewer, ballerina Alexandra Danilova recalls her long association with the choreographer George Balanchine, which began when they were both children at the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg. She describes his early work "Night" ["La nuit"] and his experiments with his first company, the Young Ballet, with which she danced. She recalls his special qualities and working habits as a choreographer, as well as his human traits. In discussing the importance of his contributions to American dance, she talks about the two great institutions he founded, the School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet.
