Abstract

Interview with David Vaughan conducted by Katy Matheson in spring 1979 in New York City, for the Columbia University Oral History Seminar. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 46 minutes). David Vaughan speaks with Katy Matheson about his family background and childhood in England including his early theater experiences; his education; the origins of his interest in ballet; his time at the University of Oxford including his participation in the Ballet Club and taking class with Marie Rambert; being drafted while still in school [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 45 minutes). David Vaughan speaks with Katy Matheson about his decision not to return to the University of Oxford after being discharged from the Army; taking class with Audrey de Vos; Marie Rambert and her classes; his war time service in India including his dance-related activities; his awareness of modern dance at the time; his performing career in London; seeing New York City Ballet in London and meeting Lincoln Kirstein [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 3].
