Abstract

Interview with David Vaughan conducted by Katy Matheson in spring 1979 in New York City, for the Columbia University Oral History Seminar. Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 46 minutes). David Vaughan speaks with Katy Matheson about his family background and childhood in England including his early theater experiences; his education; the origins of his interest in ballet; his time at the University of Oxford including his participation in the Ballet Club and taking class with Marie Rambert; being drafted while still in school [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2]. Streaming audio file 2 (approximately 45 minutes). David Vaughan speaks with Katy Matheson about his decision not to return to the University of Oxford after being discharged from the Army; taking class with Audrey de Vos; Marie Rambert and her classes; his war time service in India including his dance-related activities; his awareness of modern dance at the time; his performing career in London; seeing New York City Ballet in London and meeting Lincoln Kirstein [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 3]. Streaming audio file 3 (approximately 45 minutes). David Vaughan speaks with Katy Matheson about his first years in New York including his classes at the School of American Ballet, on scholarship; his teachers including Anatole Oboukhoff and Felia Doubrovska; Lincoln Kirstein's support of his choreographic efforts; Trudy Goth; the teaching method of Audrey de Vos compared with that of his teachers at the School of American Ballet [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 4]. David Vaughan speaks with Katy Matheson about the dancers and students at the New York City Ballet and School of American Ballet, respectively, as compared with the dancers he had known in England; his focus at that time on choreographing rather than dancing; his impressions of Merce Cunningham and his work; taking class at Martha Graham's school.
