Description
Collection culled from a variety of sources, chiefly illustrated periodicals and books, most of them dating from the nineteenth century. Some items have been trimmed of their captions and/or publication data, making identification of their sources difficult. Among the known sources of these prints are the Illustrated London News and Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion. Many of these images have a journalistic sense of immediacy and authenticity, though the engravers may have been working far from the actual scene, basing their pictures on sketches provided by artists in the field. Some of the prints include non-dance subject matter. The collection has been arranged alphabetically by geographical location.
