Sound quality is good. The recording is marred by occasional extraneous noise and short gaps, but the speakers' voices are easily audible.
Description
Interview with Erik Bruhn conducted by John Gruen as research for his book Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (1979), in Copenhagen, Denmark, on July 24, 1977. This is Part 12 of an 18-part series. However, there is no audio for parts 2 and 10, which are available only as edited transcripts. Streaming file 1 (approximately 46 minutes). Erik Bruhn speaks with John Gruen about his retirement from dancing due to his illness; his problems with Carla Fracci's rivalry with Natalia Makarova for Bruhn as a partner; Lucia Chase, in particular her kindness when he had to cancel his performances; the death of Goeran Gentele and his two daughters; his reluctance to speak about certain aspects of his past; his work with the National Ballet of Canada; his ulcer [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2]. Streaming file 2 (approximately 46 minutes). Erik Bruhn speaks with John Gruen about his ulcer; his rapid recovery; dancing in Miss Julie with Cynthia Gregory at American Ballet Theatre's 35th anniversary gala performance; his impressions of Patricia Bowman and Mia Slavenska; his attempt to become an actor; performing the role of Madge the witch, with Rudolf Nureyev as James, in the National Ballet of Canada's production of La sylphide; rehearsing with Nureyev; the response to Bruhn's Madge [ends abruptly].
