Biographical/historical: The polka-mazurka, which became popular in the 1840s, consisted of polka steps danced to the 3/4 time of the mazurka.
Biographical/historical: The title of this composition suggests that it may have some relationship to the opera L'étoile du nord (music, Giacomo Meyerbeer; libretto, Eugène Scribe), which was first presented at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1854. The opera's plot centered on the czar Peter the Great, who dons various disguises in pursuit of his lady-love Catherine.
