Abstract
The word "janizary" was really out of use by the time this picture was made. During the Renaissance, janizaries were the elite troops of the Ottoman Turkish army. Recruited from Christian war captives or slaves in Ottoman lands, they were converted to Islam as children and trained as the bravest assault troops in the Sultan's armies. Calling this Albanian soldier (in Turkish service) a janizary made him sound more exotic and, perhaps drawing on memories of centuries of Islamic-Christian strife, even more menacing.
