Interview with Marilyn Wood conducted by Sal Murgiyanto, on May 7, 1987 (approximately one hour and six minutes) and a slide show (audio only) of Wood's work accompanied by her commentary and responses to Murgiyanto's occasional questions (approximately 22 minutes). Streaming audio file 1 (approximately 47 minutes). Marilyn Wood speaks with Sal Murgiyanto about her how her background led to her work creating festival celebrations including Anna Halprin's influence; her first fully-formed work, at the Seagram Building in New York (N.Y.) as a turning point; creating a festival that results in a city celebrating itself; the purpose of festivals, in particular as structures for communal expression; the requisites for a successful festival including the use of large-scale visual media, both man-made (e.g., video projections) and natural (e.g., a mountain range); the festival she is organizing in Singapore; Anna Halprin's festivals as compared with hers; the highly-organized nature of her festivals; the skills required to create a festival; the shamanistic nature of her work; the process of creating a festival including the incorporation of the community's cultural values; the use of unconventional performance venues and the resulting expansion of audiences; celebration festivals as a way to create new traditions and rituals; cities that have made her festivals an annual event, for example Tokyo and Columbus (Ohio); festivals and religion, for example in Japan; transposing festivals to an urban context [ends abruptly; interview continues on streaming audio file 2].
