Abstract

This scene from the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 shows Austrian cavalrymen stopping to identify themselves to a pair of soldiers on picket (or guard) duty outside their lines. The horsemen are probably returning from a scouting mission, as cavalry was often used to see what the enemy was doing, and there might be wine or liquor in the canteen the sentry is offering to the rider.
