Abstract
Leonard Marcus, magazine editor and co-host of the syndicated radio program "Concert Stage" with soprano Phyllis Curtin, interviews Neville Marriner, a prominent British conductor and founder of Academy of St. Martin in the Fields chamber orchestra, about the early days of the orchestra that gained international and financial success and expanded from a chamber orchestra to a full body symphony orchestra that performs baroque music and beyond. Marriner describes the structure of the orchestra (no contracts, no pensions, high salaries, revenues from recording etc.) and choice of repertoire (explains why they do not play contemporary music which he calls avant-garde noises). Included in the program are the following music works from the recordings of the orchestra: Last mvmt of Brandenburg concerto no. 2 by Bach, Last mvmt of Symphony no. 2 by Beethoven, Spring from Botticelli pictures by Respighi, and Russian Dance by Jacob.
