Description
Two-part documentary on Ausdruckstanz, or German expressionistic dance. The first part, told through the recollections of Eva Grossmann, Walter Reuter, Lisa Czobel, Sigrid Jungé, and Ilse Loesch, traces Ausdruckstanz from its origins in the 1920s until the eve of World War II. Topics include the achievements of Mary Wigman, Gret Palucca, Rudolf Laban, Vera Skoronel, Harald Kreutzberg, Jean Weidt, and Kurt Jooss; the links between Ausdruckstanz and contemporary painting and theater; dancers' growing socio-political consciousness; and the impact of the Nazis. In the second part, Loesch, Tom Schilling, Susanne Linke, Fe Reichelt, and Gerhard Bohner discuss postwar German dance, especially the work of Dore Hoyer, Palucca, Wigman, and Ruth Berghaus. Choreographers Arila Siegert, Joachim Schlömer, and Bohner discuss and perform examples of their work, emphasizing the influence of expressionism.
