Interviews with Alicia Markova conducted by P.W. Manchester. Broadcast on April 24, May 1, and May 8, 1971 by radio station WGUC, Cincinnati, Ohio on the series, Cincinnati dance. Prepared by the Dance Division of the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Streaming audio file (approximately 43 minutes). Part 1, April 24, 1971. [Music and introduction of program by unidentified speaker.] P.W. Manchester introduces her guest Alicia Markova and plays a recording of an excerpt from Igor Stravinsky's music for George Balanchine's ballet Chant du rossignol [Song of the nightingale]; Markova speaks (briefly) about joining the Ballet russe and her first role, at age 14, of the nightingale in Song of the nightingale; she reminisces about Igor Stravinsky including how he worked with her at rehearsals as well as his generosity; Markova's costume. Manchester introduces Alicia Markova and plays a recording of an excerpt from Igor Stravinsky's music for Anton Dolin's ballet Scènes de ballet; Alica Markova speaks about the circumstances of Billy Rose's commissioning Igor Stravinsky to compose the music for Scènes de ballet, for his revue, Seven lively arts (produced at the Ziegfeld Theater, New York, in 1944-45); she reminisces about the very enjoyable working sessions with Stravinsky (and Dolin); she describes the design and lighting of the set and the choreography; performing the adagio from the pas de deux at the Stage Door Canteen.
