Manchester speaks with Carolyn Watts about the early romantic period of ballet, for the radio program Arabesques on WGUC-FM, the radio station of the University of Cincinnati; broadcast on the National Public Radio network; recorded in 1975. Streaming audio file (approximately 30 minutes). [Music; an unidentified male speaker introduces the program, Arabesques, speaker P.W. Manchester and host, Carolyn Watts.] P.W. Manchester speaks with Carolyn Watts about ballet in the 19th century including the reforms made by Jean Georges Noverre; the rise in the level of female dancers' technique; Marie Taglioni and the development of pointe work; the romantization of women and the ballet La sylphide [a recording of an excerpt of the music for La sylphide, composed by Hermann Løwenskjold, is played]; the shift in the public's interest to female dancers from male dancers; Marie Taglioni's decades-long influence on style; the introduction of tutus, gas lights, and special effects; Théophile Gauthier and his fascination with Carlotta Grisi; the ballet Giselle [a recording of an excerpt of music from Giselle, by Adolphe Adam, is played]; the strictures on music composed for ballet; the ballet La Péri and Carlotta Grisi, including her innovative leap into her partner's arms [a recording of an excerpt of the music for La Péri, by Friedrich Burgmüller is played; closing remarks by an unidentified male speaker].
