Description
Interviews with Clive Barnes, Erik Bruhn, Natalia Makarova, and Lucia Chase conducted by Dick Cavett in the intermissions between acts at a live performance of Swan lake by American Ballet Theatre [choreographed by David Blair, after Ivanov and M. Petipa] at the New York State Theatre [now the David H. Koch Theater], recorded from the telecast on June 30, 1976 by WNET, New York on its series Live from Lincoln Center. Streaming audio file (approximately 40 minutes). Dick Cavett, as host and moderator, introduces Clive Barnes; Barnes speaks about why the ballet Swan lake has such broad appeal; the original 1877 production of Swan lake including its poor reception; the thirty-two fouettés; the role of Benno, the friend of Prince Siegfried; the subordinate role of the male dancer in 19th century versions of Swan lake and other ballets of the time; the ever-present danger of a dancer's slipping [brief gap]; Cavett introduces Erik Bruhn; Bruhn speaks about his recent shoulder injury; Natalia Makarova in Swan lake, whom he describes as his favorite Swan queen; partnering; his dislike of the role of Prince Siegfried in the Royal Ballet version; his staging of Swan lake for the National Ballet of Canada; his having dropped Nora Kaye in performance on several occasions [Cavett begins to describe the scenario of Act III; this ends abruptly, followed by his introduction of Natalia Makarova; the sound quality of Cavett's voice is fair; Makarova's voice is almost completely unintelligible]; Cavett introduces Lucia Chase; Chase speaks about American Ballet Theatre including the expense of ballet shoes; sources of funds for the company; her own background in ballet [recording ends abruptly].
