Description
Sheldon Harnick, a lyricist best known for his collaborations with composer Jerry Bock on hit musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof, speaks about the tradition in his family of writing poetry; writing nonsense poetry and comedy songs at an early age; writing satirical poetry and composing songs in the army during WWII; the story about writing the words for "The man with the sign" to the tune of "The stars and stripes forever" by John Philip Sousa; playing violin in a band and extreme nervousness at performing in public that led to switching to songwriting and coming to New York; lack of good plays and books for musicals and the state of the theater in 1972; and about his most successful works: Fiddler on the Roof and Fiorello.
