Description
Michael Tilson Thomas's reflections on the resurgence of the interest in American composers with a particular focus on George Gershwin, his music and his particular melancholic style of playing that Thomas strives to recreate. Other composers of his attention are Carl Ruggles and Charles Edward Ives both of whom he knew personally. In demonstration of the analysis of their music, the following recordings are included in the program in this order (Gershwin's works from a recording made by Thomas of previously unpublished music found among the composer's manuscripts): Violin piece and For Lily Pons (melodies 40 and 79) / by Gershwin (Thomas, piano) ; Orchestra set no. 2, mvmt 2 / by Ives ; Angels / by Ruggles ; Preludes / by Gershwin (Thomas, piano).
