Notes
Content: Printed on border: "The painting herewith reproduced illustrates a tragic incident of the Vendean war of 1793-94. Vendee is a province of France, bordering on the Bay of Biscay, much of which is beautiful and fertile, but in history it is best known through the Royalist insurrection which followed upon the proclamation of the first Republic. Many of the Vendeans refused to acknowledge the new form of government, and under the leadership of Count Henri du Verger la Rochejaquelein fomented an insurrection which plunged the province into a civil war which cost thousands of lives. In the beginning of the contest the Royalists were in the ascendancy, during which time a youth named Barra, an ardent Republican, being surrounded with several of his companions by a company of Royalists, refused to give the cry 'Vive le Roi,' and was bayoneted to death while shouting 'Viv la Republique.' The Royalists were afterward defeated and a large number massacred."
