Notes
Content: This image shows a demonstration of female gladiators being watched by another group of women, probably the ones who will be sponsoring them in a show in the Colosseum (visible in the background). The fighter in the foreground is a "retarius", armed with a trident and net. Her opponent is a "secutor", outfitted with a helmet, sword and shield. These two types of gladiators were usually matched against each other. The trainer, or "lanista", holding a rod, referees the fight. This scene could be intended to represent the "Ludus Magnus", the great gladiatorial school located near the Colosseum in Rome.
