Biographical/historical: Emeralds is the first section of the three-part ballet Jewels. Emeralds premiered on April 13, 1967 by New York City Ballet at the New York State Theater, with Prelude (pas de deux) danced by Violette Verdy and Conrad Ludlow, and La Fileuse (solo) danced by Violette Verdy.

Violette Verdy and Conrad Ludow discuss George Balanchine's Emeralds section of the choreographic work, Jewels; their memories of the first rehearsal with Balanchine; Balanchine's high idea of France; Michel Fokine's influence in the movement shown through Balanchine's choreography; Ludlow talks about the complicated partnering and the pressure and tension in the movement; Balanchine liberated partnering with the freedom to use each other only when needed; piece includes clusters of complications and then moments of riding the crest of waves; dancers for this piece need a sense of quality for this work; Verdy had a French style that Balanchine often used; and Balanchine adding to the choreography of this work nine years after it was created.
